Story:
The year is 2023, and the world once again teeters on the brink of war. The China dominated Asia-Pacific Alliance, having sat comfortably as the world's foremost geopolitical power for nearly a decade, finds itself challenged on all fronts. The upstart European Union and a newly reconstituted Global Liberation Army threaten the newfound balance of power.
Trivia:
- C&C was a pure multiplayer title supposed to be extended constantly with more factions and also a singleplayer.
- On 11/23/2017, more than four years after the cancellation, the then alpha dated 10/10/2013 was leaked. It is not runnable even in conjunction with Origin, since the required servers are long gone.
- Jon LeMaitre delivered insight into the state of things on 04/17/2017 toward the end of the development:
- The question of monetization without pay-to-win was unsolved
- Every two weeks a new general was added, even though 20 weeks would have been suitable
- There was no uniform vision which could have tied all pieces together
- The graphics were "too good" a that important gameplay elements vanished in the environment
- The gameplay was strongly similar to StarCraft; he himself was employed to move it further toward C+C
- The engine was not really well suited for RTS, also the client-server model caused performance issues
- Crushing infantry was politically not intended by the team
- Generals powers were available independently of the gamer's actions; this includes just doing nothing
- At the end the game was two months away from the open beta, although two years would have been realistic
also just want to say that none of these are reasons for the cancellation as far as I know. Cancellation happened because there was a corporate shuffling, and the new leadership simply wanted to re-prioritize EA's offerings - pretty standard stuff in the gaming industry. It's doubtful they were aware of any of the nuance described above. Unfortunately I have no insight into the exact reasoning behind the cancellation (not that it matters I suppose).
- On 10/29/2013 this C&C was also cancelled, the running alpha test aborted and the studio dissolved. The farewell reads:
Generals,
Thank you for your participation over the last few months in the Command & Conquer closed alpha test. It's been much appreciated, and you've been instrumental in helping define what a new Command & Conquer experience should and shouldn't be.
Part of being in a creative team is the understanding that not all of your choices are going to work out. In this case, we shifted the game away from campaign mode and built an economy-based, multiplayer experience. Your feedback from the alpha trial is clear: We are not making the game you want to play. That is why, after much difficult deliberation, we have decided to cease production of this version of the game. Although we deeply respect the great work done by our talented team, ultimately it's about getting you the game you expect and deserve.
Over the next 10 days we will be refunding any and all money spent in the alpha. If you have a question about your refund, please contact help.ea.com.
We believe that Command & Conquer is a powerful franchise with huge potential and a great history, and we are determined to get the best game made as soon as possible. To that end, we have already begun looking at a number of alternatives to get the game back on track. We look forward to sharing more news about the franchise as it develops. Thank you again for your participation and support.
- Victory Studios - The free-to-play C&C was announced at gamescom 2012, for which the cancelled Generals 2 acted as a breeding ground and therefore provided the starting contents.
- The engine used was Frostbite 2 by developer DICE (Battlefield 3).
